A Life of Friction

For good or for bad friction follows us wherever we go.

To define what I mean by this idea of friction is to find resistance in a decision or action due to uncomfortable or inconvenient situations.

Friction is ever present in everyone’s life. In fact it controls a lot of our choices, habits and life experiences, we just don’t realize it.

To help you understand how, I’ll give you some examples…

Natural friction:

  • Tiredness/soreness leading to lack of want to exercise.

  • Time constraint/business leading to lack of opportunity to do the things you love.

  • Relationship conflict leading to a lack of connection and possible social isolation.

  • Tight expenses leading to a lack of freedom in life choices.

…and so many more. Consider what these may be in your life.

However then there is the helpful friction. We can use this idea of adding friction to areas of your life to help you change for the better.

Helpful Friction:

  • Leaving your phone in another room to promote inconvenience of having to get it and instead focus on the task at hand(ie. studying, working).

  • Purposefully not buying certain foods to promote inconvenience of going to the store and thus avoid temptation.

  • Locking your money into some type of fixed investment to avoid the ease of excessive spending.

…..and again so many more. Think of things you could do or maybe already implement that are helping you realign your goals.

Whatever this idea of friction may look like for you, consider how does it help or hurt you? And then from that, start to brainstorm ways in which you can remove or place it into your life in order to lead to growth.
